LASEK EYE SURGERY - MY EXPERIENCE

Wake up. Scramble for glasses. Shower. Can't see anything. Put my make-up on. Sit as close to the mirror as humanely possible. Go Swimming. Swim only above water. Spontaneous night out. Can't happen.

You may or may not know this but it's not that easy being a glasses wearer. Well - not for me anyway. I was blessed with short-sighted vision. This means that I can't see things that are far away and as my eye sight has deteriorated, I can barely see past the tip of my nose. Fun right?

There are so many implications which come with wearing glasses which people with perfect vision just don't have. I am pulled back in so many ways due to the hassle of my glasses in ways that you can never imagine. I can't see my face as I do my make-up, I can't see when I wake up, and if I put my glasses down,  I have to wait for someone to help me find them.

It's safe to say that life becomes less spontaneous so I decided to have eye surgery. I went to Optical Express, the market leader in the surgery and not only did my Dad have his eyes done there, but so have many other people. So, let's find out my experience shall we?!

The lead up to the surgery was nerve wracking. Hearing all the horror stories, I desperately tried to calm myself down each night as I couldn't sleep with worry. I was going to be having Lasek - a more serious surgery with longer recovery time, which only 10% of people have. My eye sight was really bad and I had astigmatism, so I had no option but to have Lasek. Now, the important thing to note here is that the entire team were amazingly kind and reassuring to answer all of my questions. The consultations were quick, informative and very professional. I was told every tiny detail and was warned at least four times of the pain which I was to expect, which is a great thing in my opinion.

I had surgery on 1st December 2016 (note, you must wear glasses for one week before surgery - cue weird looks at the gym). As I arrived, I was taken in for the same eye tests that I'd had done previously, and then I went in…. I won't go into the gory details of what happened but it's safe to say that I didn't feel a thing. I expected myself to be a nervous wreck - to have tears streaming down my face, demanding my mum to hold my hand, but I got through it, and it was genuinely okay.

After the surgery my vision was blurry but I felt fine. After being at home for an hour or so, the light sensitivity kicked in.. and then came the pain. Honestly and truthfully, I have never felt anything so excruciating in my life. My eyes burned for about a week straight. I was horrendously nauseous from the pain and with the lack of sleep, I was feeling pretty terrible. The light sensitivity was something like no other, I couldn't open my eyes even a fraction and I had to wear my sunglasses at all times, even in a dark room. On day 7 I went back to have my bandages removed and my eyes had healed, but were still raw. They felt gritty, but this was bareable compared to the past week I'd had.

Today is 6th January 2016, so it's been just over a month since I had them done. My eyes feel dry and a little hazy - but there is no pain in them, they just feel a little gritty.

I've only just started driving again as my vision still isn't 20/20 and I can already feel the benefits of not having to wear glasses, even if I still can't see very well. If Lasek is something that you need to have too, then definitely look into recovery time. Another thing to note is that this is not cheap. Having a savings account definitely helps but definitely do think about it as it's a huge cost implication on your life.

I have tried to be as honest as I can in my experience of having Lasek. Don't get me wrong, I know loads of people who have had Lasik, and have gone back to work the next day, but Lasek is just a different kind of surgery. I would 100% recommend having laser eye surgery if you can - so far I can already tell my life is going to be changed. I just have to take one day at a time!
